- Shut the hatch
Sometimes workers forget to shut the hatch either when they have both their hands full with tools or they are in a hurry. But closing the hatch when not in use is the safest way to reduce the chances of falls. Train employees to learn their safety and keep on top of their minds when working.
Additionally, hatch doors should be marked with colour coding words like hole or cover for security.
- OSHA guidelines
According to OSHA regulations, roof hatch safety rails should be present around rooftop openings, whether they are ladder entryways or roof holes.
Additionally, any rooftop hatch that is present within 15 feet of the rooftop edge should be protected with guardrail systems.
Furthermore, OSHA requires that managers install safety guard rails capable of withstanding 200 pounds in a downward gesture within 2 inches of the top edge.
- Know whether to use chains or self-closing gates.
